[2:12] Pete Ferriero: I mean, I'm with you. Also, we're going to get into the L.A. New York thing, but I will say that I fold every pizza that I have ever eaten. You ever see people do the thing where they leave the pizza sort of unfolded? I don't mess with it like that. Everything needs to be folded. Fold your pizza.

[2:27] Robert Bannon: So Pete got kicked out of New Jersey because he decided to write a documentary where he said that L.A. has the best pizza, more than Chicago, more than New York, and I think the East Coast banded up with pitchforks and axes and moved his ass out of the state. No, Pete, Pete, what happened, Pete? Why'd you trade? You're a traitor. What happened?

[2:57] Pete Ferriero: I'm a bit of a traitor. Okay, some kid from Jersey was like, when he found out I was moving to L.A., he was like, you can't get good pizza in L.A. That's the problem. And I was like, no, in fact, not only can I get good pizza, the best pizza's in L.A. And then I had no idea if that was true. And so I saw a TV report where this guy was talking about L.A. has the best pizza, and I was like, okay, I now need to go see and find all of these pizza places and make a documentary about it and take people that I knew to really see if L.A.'s pizza held up. And it's best. It's better. It's better than New York. And I have my reasons why, but I'll save them.

[3:44] Pete Ferriero: Save them for the documentary. You could watch the documentary. It's out like now, like this minute. For me, the biggest reason, if I'm being honest, is that New York pizza, which I love, so I'm not dissing it totally, but New York pizza seems to be all the same in New York. It feels like it's all the same style of New York pizza. And I love that style. And in Detroit, maybe it's the square. And they do have a variation of other pizzas and dominoes. But in L.A., I can get a Tokyo-style pizza. I can get a New York-style pizza. I can get deep dish. I can get a bar pie. I can get every variation of pizza. So to me, the collection of pizza is what makes it the best city in the world for pizza.

L.A., in the essence of, it's the L.A. scene and the way that foie gras pizza with alfalfa sprouts on it is not what Pete is saying is the best pizza. He is saying the range and availability of multiple pizzas is better in L.A. than across the country.

[5:09] Pete Ferriero: Okay, Pete, I'll give you, you get two points. And I will argue that the variations of those pizza are the best of that version. Now, do I think the best New York pizza is in L.A.? Hard to say. That's a hard one. But I can get really good New York pizza in Los Angeles.

[5:34] Pete Ferriero: Oh, I would love that. I would love that.

[5:36] Robert Bannon: So what do you, I've seen the documentary. I'm not trying to give it away. I'm trying to be an observer to your style and how this came about. Firstly, what is your toppings on pizza? And is there an unacceptable topping?

[5:48] Pete Ferriero: There is no, out in Los Angeles, there's no unacceptable topping. Now, I've eaten pizza in New York where people have attempted to put pineapple and things like that. I don't know if they're getting it. But if there is some sort of salty ham, like on a pineapple or pear pizza, it's incredible. To me, there is literally no topping that is, you know, look, there's a legacy of pizza, right? There's a style of pizza and there's areas in the world where it's like, oh, this is the way pizza is. And we can't do this and we can't do that. It's like, but that evolution is changing. The craftsmanship and womanship of pizza out in Los Angeles is next level. They're not afraid to make a Mexican pizza or a corn pizza with some spicy thing on top of it.

My ideal pizza sometimes is just a cheese slice. You know, sometimes I'm good with that. The place out here in L.A., Danny Boy's, has an incredible sausage pizza. So I'll go and have a sausage pizza. You know, I mean, I'm not afraid of pepperoni. I'm not afraid of pepperoni. Are you afraid of pepperoni?

[6:55] Robert Bannon: No, I don't love pepperoni. And I don't love bacon. And I eat pork. I just would prefer, I'd eat a veggie slice. It doesn't sound like you eat pork. It sounds, you said two things where it doesn't sound like you're eating pork. It just sounded like, like you're, you're, you're not really into it.

[7:07] Pete Ferriero: Bacon is for breakfast. Bacon is for breakfast. And pepperoni is, I don't know, I'd make an Italian hero. I like mushroom, but see, I'm controversial. I like mushroom pizza a lot.

[7:17] Robert Bannon: I love mushroom pizza, but I'm also not like a white pizza person. I've eaten white pizza person, white pizza, white pizzas, but I'm just not, I'm like, it's not my go-to. I need red sauce and I need cheese. That might be the Jersey. I get, okay. Pete, I feel better now. I feel like I haven't sold my soul out to have this interview with you and your documentary.

She was more, I was more worried about like the date concept. And she was like, no, what pizza spot? Like, I was like, okay, well, what about Di Amore's? And she's like, oh, I love that pizza spot. And then that's kind of how that happened.

[8:53] Pete Ferriero: And then the chefs, I'm a huge Food Network fan. I'm a huge fan of all those old school guys like Emeril and Bobby and the new school ones too. Like, I mean, I love Brooke and I've been eating at Nancy Silverton's Pizza Place forever. So to me, it was just like, I need some of these people in here, some of these experts, some of these chefs to go with me on this trip to say, no, that's a really solid pizza. Or you know what, that one's not so good.
