[0:00] Robert Bannon: Are you ready? It's The Roundtable with me, Robert Bannon.

[0:31] Robert Bannon: I wanted Melissa Joan Hart, and I got Melissa Joan Hart. And if there's nothing better than a Halloween baby, then Sabrina is going to be a reunion 30 years. How is it 30 years, Melissa Joan Hart?

[0:41] Melissa Joan Hart: Oh, don't even get me started, because that makes me, I don't know how old.

[0:46] Robert Bannon: 32.

[0:47] Melissa Joan Hart: Still 29. Yeah.

[0:49] Robert Bannon: Perfect. And guess what? She's coming here to Royal Oak, and you're coming across the country with this incredible event. Sabrina casts for you in 30th anniversary live. Congratulations. Welcome to the show.

[0:59] Melissa Joan Hart: Thank you. Yeah, it's going to be super exciting, super fun. We're pumped. We did one of these in Chicago in June, and it went off like gangbusters. Everybody loved it, including my 18-year-old, which is saying a lot. He told me afterwards, he goes, Mom, that was actually entertaining, and you didn't look 50. And I was like, those are the two best compliments I've ever gotten. So then I was like, well, maybe we need to do this again. So we decided to get the band back together, and we're getting on the road.

[1:24] Robert Bannon: But you're on the road for like 15 days. You're going all around the entire, like you're doing Halloween in Massachusetts.

[1:30] Melissa Joan Hart: We are in Salem, Massachusetts, of all the places. Yes. So that'll be exciting. And then Providence, and then we're going all over Florida. We're going to do like Cleveland, Pittsburgh. And then we're coming to you, and then we're going to go do California right after.

[1:43] Robert Bannon: And when I say like you got the cast together, we love Caroline, we love Beth, we love Nate. You didn't just get Melissa Joan Hart, Caroline Ray, Beth Broderick, and Nate together. You got the cast together.

[1:56] Melissa Joan Hart: Yes, and people will be fluctuating in and out, but we'll be bringing in other guest stars and people to kind of fill in when people can't be there. So we have a really fun show. We're super excited. It's going to be, oh, gosh, you're going to see things that you've never seen before, mainly bloopers. I was actually just going through the bloopers before I got on this call with you, and the only thing is they're a little grainy because they were ripped from a VHS tape. Like we got the VHS tape 30 years ago. It was ripped to DVD like 10 years ago or 10 years later. So it's been moved around a little bit. So it's a little grainy, but if you pay attention and you're quiet, you'll hear all the funny jokes.

And we'll be doing some skits. We're going to do a little Harvey versus Josh moment. We had a few of those in the show, and I love that debate. We're going to bring someone up on stage and ask them to do – we're going to audition people for the best Salem voice to see who could play Salem. We're going to do a question and answer period. We're going to do a sing-along. It's just going to be – it's going to be a blast. You need to get your tickets right now.

[3:01] Robert Bannon: Right now.

[3:02] Melissa Joan Hart: I think the VIP meet and greets are almost gone if they're not already, which gets you like a photograph and meeting the cast at the end. But, yeah, we hope to have full theaters. We want to have lots of fun. Wear your costumes. Bring your cat, whatever. I saw the pictures of them. People were posting the meet and greet pictures. They're so cute because it's literally the whole cast is around you. You get to meet them. There's a merchandise package as well with some signless Joan Hart swag that you can get.

[3:27] Robert Bannon: Yes.

[3:28] Melissa Joan Hart: It's the perfect gift this fall. If you're looking for something to do for Halloween with your kids, with your family, with your grandma, this is the show to go to.

[3:36] Melissa Joan Hart: Yeah, and, I mean, Halloween goes all year round. Isn't it like – I think that besides like October, I think February, around Valentine's Day, is like the number two time to launch a horror movie or whatever. So I feel like people are into spooky season all year long now.

[3:50] Robert Bannon: All year long. Is this something that came to you in an idea? You do – there's a huge resurgence for 90s stuff and 2000s, huge, from the conventions to the television shows to the reboots. When did the idea come that we are dying for this?

[4:05] Melissa Joan Hart: That's a good question. So we started off with doing a lot of Comic Cons because those were becoming the big thing. We loved getting the gang back together and meeting the fans and getting out there. But I just felt like – I started doing some stand-up. Caroline Rae got me into some stand-up stuff, and I was doing some stand-up, and I was like, I love being on stage. I haven't been on stage in forever. I love being on stage. I love entertaining. I love making people laugh, getting the applause, taking the bow, and going home. And I feel like this is – I saw some people do the podcast ones, like Pod Meets World went around and did tours. And all these people were doing tours, and I was like, well, why don't we do one?

I was like, this should be fairly simple. With this many people that love to talk, and we love to talk about ourselves, and we love to talk about the show, so let's get together and do that and go around instead of being kind of at the mercy of these Comic Cons and where they are and which city and who gets invited. We can put it together ourselves and do this. So this gives us a little bit more control over the content, and we get to get up on stage and entertain, which is what we want to do, right? And it gives the fans access to us in every city. It's perfect, and it's different than a meet and greet or a con because you get to hear things and experience your relationship that we don't get to see when we get to see it.

And everybody loves live because there are the blooper moments, and only you're going to get to see them. If you're in Detroit, you're only going to see that show. Those funny bits and moments might not reflect when you're in Salem or you're in Fresno. So, yeah, it's exciting to do something live because you never know what's going to happen.

[5:40] Melissa Joan Hart: You never know what's going to happen. And listen, Royal Oak Music Hall, right outside of Detroit, it is a gorgeous theater. There's such good food, everybody. You go out, have a drink, get something to eat, and then come see this show.

[5:51] Robert Bannon: Yeah. 1996 to 2003, there was 163 episodes of Sabrina.

[5:59] Melissa Joan Hart: Yeah, three movies. We did the first Sabrina movie that launched into the TV show, 163 episodes. We did Sabrina Down Under, Sabrina Goes to Rome. We had an animated series. I mean, I'm looking at all my merchandise on the walls, like dolls and games. I mean, it was a huge franchise, and it was amazing, and we had so much fun. The guest stars we had and the musical people we had, it was sort of like doing a variety show in a sense because also it was magic. You want to go ski on Mars, or you want to jump over a volcano, or you want to be Alice in Wonderland, or you want to do Cirque du Soleil, or you want to be the Matrix? We did it all, anything that was pop culture, in the zeitgeist at the moment, anything that was retro, that was cool.

We had Blondie and the Monkees and Johnny Mathis at Christmas. We could cover the game, but we had Coolio and NSYNC. I mean, apparently Kelly Clarkson was a background extra on the show. I don't know which episode, but you can look it up. So there's so much that was happening, and we could do it all because we were magic, because it was this fun kind of loose show. So it was super fun. I loved it. Someone asked me the other day, they said, do you remember when you watched it? I'm like, the times change. I remember 8 o'clock Friday nights, TGIF. As a kid of a certain age, this was must-see television. Everyone remembers it. It is a part of the DNA. Look, I have on my wall the side of a bus. Can you see that up there?

It says Sabrina, right? It's me with my tongue out. I don't know why they used that photo, but I love it. And I've had that forever. I don't know why I have that or who gave it to me, but I have that. And the other part of the bus sign, you can see there's a little white C because it was clueless because everything was like, all the ads and everything was like, clueless, and at the bottom, and then stick around for Sabrina. But it's so funny that our show actually ended up being the little show that could.

[7:58] Robert Bannon: When I think of you, I was reading about you. You did like two dozen commercials by like five years old.

[8:04] Melissa Joan Hart: Oh, I had done like, yeah. My parents estimated around 100, 150 commercials by the time I was like 12.

[8:12] Robert Bannon: Yeah.

[8:13] Melissa Joan Hart: It was crazy. And then Clarissa is huge.

[8:17] Robert Bannon: So as a Nickelodeon, you literally invented Nickelodeon for me and my childhood. I see you climbing through the window. It is sketched and etched into my brain. That was a huge giant hit. Lightning doesn't strike two, three, four, ten times in a career. When you left, when Clarissa was over and Sabrina happened, and then Sabrina, and then you do Melissa and Joey, and you do Drives Me Crazy, and you keep doing it. Your work keeps coming. How does it feel? Is it magical? Is it just another day at work?

[8:45] Melissa Joan Hart: Well, you know, it's funny growing up, first of all, in New York doing a lot of Broadway where you don't get paid a lot, but you're on stage. You get the applause. You know, you get that thrill of entertaining. I just feel like I was always told child stars don't have a future as an adult. So I was always looking for – I was telling my husband this yesterday. I've always been looking for that hobby.

[9:10] Melissa Joan Hart: But it just kept kind of, it had its hooks in me and just kept bringing me back in. When I was done with Clarissa, I was like, well, that's it. I got to go to college. And I was like adamant that I got to go to college. And I was going to NYU and I got a, oh, my son's trying to call me. And I got a call to do a movie in Jacksonville, Florida. And I was like, ooh, maybe I need to go do that because I haven't like, but no, I have to go to college. This is just a one-off thing. And then it was like, every time I went to try to start something else, something else would pop up, you know? So I just kept working and Sabrina came around when I was 20. So midway through college. So I had to postpone college and never really, never graduated.

I still plan to do that when I'm like 80. But you know, and then Melissa and Joey came along right when I was ready to quit the business because I had done an episode of Law and Order and I was like miserable on the set, like absolutely miserable. And I was like, I'm never, either I go back to comedy or I'm not working again. And luckily Melissa and Joey, my mom and I created that show and here, you know, here we go. So, so I was able to have another five-year run on another hit show. And that one was so much fun for me because it was less work and much more like silliness for me. And then I got to do No Good Nick in 2018, 2019 with Sean Astin on Netflix. And that was amazing. But yeah, three title characters, four series, you know, two of them going over a hundred episodes. It was, it's been, it's been a good run I'll say. And continues. And that's why you have to go see it live and in person and see Melissa Joan Hart live in person.

[10:43] Robert Bannon: Your mom and you are boss ladies. Like I don't know if people know how much you've directed and how many episodes of television that we've enjoyed you've directed and how influential you both are. My movie Watcher. I've got all my posters behind me. You got Watcher in the Woods right here that I did with Angelica Houston, Tallulah Evans and oh, the other way. No, you're perfect. No, I'm pointing right at this. Yeah. So it's Watcher in the Woods and it was on Lifetime and it was a remake of my favorite scary movie as a kid. And I got to direct that one. I'm not in, that's like the only one I didn't even make a cameo in, but I directed that. And it's also got the handsome Nicholas Galazettin from He-Man and all the wonderful, what's coming out right now? Mosquito. The Mosquito Boys or something like that.

[11:27] Melissa Joan Hart: Yeah. You directed Angelica Houston. You have these-

[11:31] Robert Bannon: I was terrified, but I did it.

[11:32] Melissa Joan Hart: You did it. So what I love about your career is that it's evolved and you're a mom and you're an inspiration that you can be a wife and a mom and a creative and an actor and you can do it, literally do it all from birth. And you've made it prove that child stars are superstars who can grow on to have big giant careers. And it's not all in the tap, but there's a stigma to it and you've proved it wrong.

[11:54] Melissa Joan Hart: There is, because other than the ones you hear about, you don't really hear about the ones that are doing well. You don't hear about the, you know, the Sarah Michelle Gellers and the Candice Cameron Berets as much because we don't make the headlines because we're not doing anything except raising our families and working, you know? And those of us like Sarah and I were raised on the East Coast where it was a little bit more like work, right? It wasn't about the glam. We weren't going to red carpets. We weren't going to openings of things and premieres and meeting other famous people. We were kind of like in the trenches of the audition process and meeting each other that way and doing theater and whatnot. That's how I made a lot of my friends. Like Lacey Chabert is one of them and, you know, and I feel like there was definitely a work ethic and less of a fame money situation happening. So I think that that helped keep some of us on the right path.

[12:45] Robert Bannon: Well, look, you know, you all don't even know. She's like an actor, like the Crucible actor, like on Broadway people.

[12:51] Melissa Joan Hart: I did. I have my poster over here.

[12:52] Robert Bannon: Yeah. OK. That's she acts. OK, so you may know Clarissa. You may know Melissa and Joey. You may know the Broadway. You may know the movies. You know the directing. And, you know, she won a million dollars on Wheel of Fortune, everybody.

[13:04] Melissa Joan Hart: Excuse me. It was a million nine thousand eight hundred.

[13:08] Robert Bannon: Wait. Oh.

[13:09] Melissa Joan Hart: Almost two million.

[13:11] Robert Bannon: Yeah. No, no, no.

[13:16] Melissa Joan Hart: No. One million thirty nine thousand eight hundred. That's what it was. Not that I've memorized it or anything.

[13:22] Robert Bannon: She does. She knows it all. And it's my favorite thing. It's my favorite thing on my bio. So it's my favorite thing.

[13:29] Melissa Joan Hart: All for charity, by the way.

[13:31] Robert Bannon: A million dollars. So get. Look, and you know, it's a lot less than a million dollars tickets to go see this. And yes. And Sully Moon Frye. Talk about child stars. And I had a moment where I was like, oh, my God, that was her as a kid. Punky Brewster. Sabrina. Punky Brewster. Amarok City.

[13:47] Melissa Joan Hart: Yeah. And then Elisa Donovan, who was in Clueless and Sabrina and then David Lasher, who was in Hey Dude and Clueless.

[13:54] Robert Bannon: Yeah, there's a lot. There's a lot going on there. Detroit. Royal Oak Music Theater dot com. Everybody else. There's a website for Sabrina Cast Reunion. Go to Sabrina Cast Reunion dot com. All the dates are there. Cast Reunion Live. I believe. Sabrina Cast Reunion Live. It's a long one. And you get all of the dates. Go give it to somebody. It's the perfect thing. You know, when I was thinking about Halloween episodes, when I was thinking about turning 43, when I was thinking about growing up, you were the dream person to be here. And the fact that you're here with us and people are so excited that you're here. I can't thank you enough for many years of entertaining us. And all the time you spent on set and away from your family has given me and my family so much joy. I thank you so much for what you've done for us.

[14:37] Melissa Joan Hart: Well, thank you for saying that. That's very sweet. And I hope to see you there. I'm going to be in Royal Oak. I'll be yelling and screaming. I'll bring my fake stuffed cat.

[14:44] Robert Bannon: Yeah, bring your fake cat. Bring your. Yeah, you can get a fanny pack that says this is your shake your whammy fanny pack. So, you know.

[14:53] Melissa Joan Hart: I need that. I'm ready.

[14:55] Robert Bannon: Everybody does. Everybody needs a shake your whammy fanny. That's a conversation party piece.

[15:02] Melissa Joan Hart: That is perfect. Perfect.

[15:04] Robert Bannon: Melissa Joan Hart, thank you so much.

[15:05] Melissa Joan Hart: Thank you for being here.

[15:06] Robert Bannon: Thank you. And I'll see you in Detroit.

[15:08] Melissa Joan Hart: OK.
